Weight Loss Surgery Leader Hospital Angeles Offers $7,500 All-Inclusive Medical Travel Holiday Program for New Device-Free Gastric Plication Procedure

Weight Loss Surgery Leader Hospital Angeles Offers $7,500 All-Inclusive Medical Travel Holiday Program for New Device-Free Gastric Plication Procedure

Hospital Angeles Tijuana, just 20 minutes from downtown San Diego, adds the new restrictive weight loss surgery procedure Gastric Plication to its annual holiday bariatric specials, when demand for obesity surgery is typically highest.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 13, 2010

Hospital Angeles has expanded its internationally well-regarded weight loss surgery program to include a $7,500 Gastric Plication all-inclusive medical travel special. The hospital is also offering a $5,000 LAP-BAND program. Patients must schedule gastric plication or LAP-BAND by January 31st 2011, and have the procedure by March 1, 2011, to receive the special pricing.

Gastric Plication is a new restrictive weight loss surgery procedure that involves no devices or stomach resection (restriction is accomplished with the use of non-absorbable suturing) while offering patients faster, more intense weight loss than is observed with gastric banding. In September 2010 Dr. Lopez Corvala, gastroenterologist surgeon at Hospital Angeles Tijuana, presented findings from more than 100 gastric plication findings at the 15th Congress of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO).

Dr. Lopez-Corvala reported his findings about the gastric plication procedure support earlier clinical data reported at the Euro-Mediterranean & Middle East laparoscopic meeting. SFCE-MMESA held in Bordeaux-France November 13-15, 200, as well as the Bariatric Times (Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication: An Alternative Restrictive Bariatric Procedure, May 2010).

The gastric plication (which means 'to pleat') procedure is generating excitement among bariatric surgeons because it is less invasive (than RNY bypass, defined by the National Institutes of Health as the current gold standard for obesity surgery) and features minimal risk of acute or late complications, while providing patients with weight loss that comes sooner and is more intense than restrictive gastric banding. Weight loss results reported by patients mirror weight loss patterns for patients of the RNY gastric bypass, a more invasive procedure with greater risk of complication.

The gastric plication procedure requires about 60 minutes of operating time and 24-48 hours of recovery. Patients are required to have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or higher to qualify.

Hospital Angeles Tijuana has become a preferred destination for weight loss surgery among international patients since opening in 2006, in part because its state-of-the-art facilities are located just 20 minutes from downtown San Diego. Patients of the Angeles Health International weight loss surgery medical travel program receive free round-trip transport from San Diego International airport as part of their all-inclusive price.

Hospital Angeles Tijuana is part of the largest private hospital network in Mexico; the showpiece gated medical complex features hospital with 116 private rooms and suites, 12 operating suites, 8 ICU units, and 24x7 English-speaking surgeon, nurse and on-site international patient concierge availability, as well as the offices of more than 130 board-certified specialists.

Dr. Lopez Corvala is the President of the Mexican Association of Endoscopic Surgery and an internationally recognized professor of bariatrics and a regular presenter at bariatric conferences, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Conference on Extreme Bariatric Surgery held in February 2010. He has held four gastric plicaiton surgical training sessions at Hospital Angeles Tijuana in 2010; seven additional sessions are planned for 2011.

A recent spate diet pills has failed to receive FDA approval, which limits options for the increasing overweight Americans, making weight loss surgery, particularly noninvasive options such as gastric banding and gastric plication, will continue to become more of a frontline option rather than a last resort.

The bariatric surgery team at Hospital Angeles has performed more than 7,000 weight loss surgeries on patients from the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Patients can inquire about their qualification for gastric plication or LAP-BAND surgery by contacting the international patient department at Hospital Angeles 866.668.9263. Adolescent candidates are accepted but must meet special requirements including strong parental involvement and commitment. Hospital Angeles gastric plication and LAP-BAND medical travel packages include travel concierge services and medical shuttle transport for all patients.
