Arizona Author Releases New Speculative Fiction Novel
When a private citizen discovers an inexpensive and safe new space drive and begins launching satellites from his backyard in metropolitan Atlanta, the local police take notice. When it's discovered that the same technique can make the ultimate weapon and he refuses to turn it over to the military, the government takes notice. When he blackmails the governments of the United States and the Russian Federation into supplying him with their top scientists to accompany him on the first manned expedition to Mars, the world takes notice.

IN THE BEGINNING, ISBN: 1-4116-3848-4
By Ben W. Gardner
Mike Angel, a retired Navy Seal who holds several doctorates, develops the ultimate artificially intelligent computer and together they solve the Unified Field Theory and how to generate and control the forces of gravity. Using this knowledge, Mike expands the uses of this technique to create a space drive, an impenetrable force field, and the means to form a quantum singularity at will using several existing technologies.
In the Beginning takes place in 2010, our near future, and explores not just the political intrigues involved in withholding potential weapons systems from the government, but the realities of fully open science on a global scale. In today's world, where civilians have reached the fringes of space with the Ansari X-prize, we can see many of the implications of totally civilian run space travel. What if this is taken a step further? What if the new science to make this possible is a double-edged sword that would also provide the ultimate weapon to whatever nation possessed it? What if the inventor refuses to turn it over? These are a few of the scenarios that are explored in In the Beginning.
Consider that the future is in the hands of the young. Mike demands that children be brought along on this expedition and makes them the most important people on the crew. Consider that most government-sponsored science is cloaked in secrecy, but Mike insists that two journalists, one American, the other Russian, accompany them on the adventure and provide global 24/7 television coverage of their discoveries.
Again, these are just a few of the scenarios explored in the novel.
Science Fiction is not everyone's genre of choice, but how many of us were up at midnight watching Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon? How many of us watched Space Ship One win the X-prize? How many of us look forward to an airline flight that would have qualified us for astronaut status ten years ago?
and what will be the discoveries that humans can make on Mars that robot probes can not?
Mr. Gardner has had several colorful careers over the years: a broadcaster, diver in the U. S. Navy, broadcast journalist, broadcast engineer, teacher of quantum mechanics at the university level, computer scientist. All of these skills come together to create In the Beginning.
