Park West Gallery (http://www. pwgart. com) Artist Biography series invites you to be astonished by the technical brilliance of the artwork of Albrecht Dürer. Through his masterful application of the rules of perspective combined with an extraordinary eye for detail, Dürer's engravings achieve in black and white an amazing lifelike realism that has fascinated viewers for hundreds of years.
Born in Nuremberg, Germany on May 21, 1471, Dürer apprenticed under his goldsmith father and later spent three years as an apprentice under painter, Michael Wogemut. After traveling for 18 months through Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands developing his artistic skills and knowledge, he returned to Nuremberg and in 1494 wed Agnes Frey under an arranged marriage. His later visits to Italy and the Renaissance in artwork there would come to greatly influence Dürer's own works. It was there that his interest in perspective, anatomy, and proportion was peaked and would develop into a lifelong preoccupation.
Dürer became a court painter to the Emperor Maximilian in 1512. The marginal decorations he drew for the Emperor's printed prayer book would later manifest into the first book published in lithography (1808). During his lifetime, Dürer successfully published two books; one focused on geometry and perspective and the other became his treatise on proportion.
An exceptionally learned artist, Dürer was known for his prodigious technique in engraving, or the incision in steel or copper plates with a burin, without the use of acid biting, to create prints from the plate. Dürer was the first artist to take interest in the theoretical problems of art and he successfully combined his knowledge with this mastery of engraving to facilitate the refinement of graphic art.
Most celebrated are Dürer's series of prints and engravings, including the "Apocalypse" (1498), the "Great Passion" (1498-1510), the "Little Passion" (1510-1511) and individual prints such as "Knight, Death, and the Devil" (1513), "Saint Jerome in his Study" (1514), and "Melenolia I" (1514).
"Why has God given me such magnificent talent? It is a curse as well as a great blessing… If a man devotes himself to art, much evil is avoided that happens otherwise if one is idle… No single man can be taken as a model for a perfect figure, for no man lives on earth who is endowed with the whole of beauty… What beauty is, I know not, thought it adheres to many things." - Albrecht Dürer
