Ray A. Llanos

Through his camera, Ray Llanos has captured many places and faces: Avery Brooks, Ozzie Davis, Ruby Dee, Susan Taylor, Hillary Clinton, Jimmy Cliff, Gordon Parks, and Bill Cosby are just some of the names you would find in his library of photographs. Ray continues to enjoy photography with the same vigor and passion as the day he started. As a “Photo Griot,” Ray Llanos is always seeking new projects and assignments to help him tell the stories through his eyes.

Born in St. Croix, U. S.V. I. Ray’s family decided to move to Silver Spring, Maryland in the early eighties. Growing up in the Washington, D. C. metropolitan area is where photography began to play a role in his life. A successful freelance photographer over the past three years, Ray began his career in Washington, D. C. where he received excellent mentoring in photography business etiquette and technique from Oggi Ogburn, a premier Music Industry photographer of 30 years.

One of his primary influences in photography is his older brother Rafael “Rafie” Llanos, Jr., a freelance photographer for over 15 years. Ray spent many years in front of the camera as a subject for his brother or at his side as an assistant on various photography jobs.

As Ray began to travel, he began to record his trips with friends and family. After purchasing several point and shoot cameras, he began to snap away and document the many stories of their escapades. Friends and family began to take note of his ability and raw talent to capture the essence of the moment and encouraged him to pursue photography further. With the support of his best friend Lesley Ann Bailey, Ray purchased his first SLR camera and began to take his photography to the next level. It didn’t take long before opportunities to shoot commercially opened up.
