Sunny in DL, a public art exhibit, again brightens the Detroit Lakes community for the summer months. Sunny is DL is a series of more than 40 hand decorated fish standing 4' x 2.5' each. The fish are sponsored by local businesses and individuals, decorated by local artists, and displayed all over Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

This is the third year that Sunny in DL has made an appearance. In the past the art exhibits have been popular with vacationers and community members. Many tourists visit the Chamber web site in advance of their vacation to download maps of the sunfish (http://www. visitdetroitlakes. com/visitor-info/maps/ (http://www. visitdetroitlakes. com/visitor-info/maps/)). While others pick up a map at the Chamber office or just happen upon the fish as they visit the various shops in Detroit Lakes. Families have enjoyed taking pictures with the fish over the years.

Sunny in DL began with the creative minds of two inspired organizers and a talented local artist in the fall of 2002. The artist created a 4' x 2.5' clay sunfish model. A mold was made and 50 fiberglass fish were cast. Seasoned and emerging artists were invited to submit designs that imaginatively celebrated the nature of the Detroit Lakes area. The response was amazing, with designs ranging from the serious to the whimsical.

These Fish Get Around

In 2003, one fish, painted purple and gold, traveled downstream to the Minnesota Viking's Spring Training camp in Mankato. It was autographed by more than 20 players and coaches and later auctioned off. Sponsorship and auction dollars covered artists' costs and raised money toward a bronze sailboat sculpture for future placement on the Detroit Lakes public beach.
