Nightengale Press is a new, independent publishing house dedicated to helping novelists, short story writers, how-to experts, poets, authors of children books, biographers, and artists publish their work. As its mission, Nightengale Press chooses to keep copyrights, artistic control --- and most of the profit --- in the hands of the authors.

Working with Lightning Source, Inc., an Ingram subsidiary, Nightengale Press is able to very cost effectively produce a high quality product and make it available worldwide to bookstores, libraries and online retailers. The cost of creation can be kept to a very reasonable rate because of the advantages provided by print – on – demand (POD) technology.

Nightengale Press is the vision of Valerie Connelly, a persistent author who found the way to produce and market her own work by creating Nightengale Press. But, not content to be viewed as a self-publisher, she has opened the way for others to enjoy the benefits of the high-tech age.

“I am motivated by a powerful unwillingness to fail. I had had enough of rejection by the conventional publishing world. Even those who did offer to publish my work wanted all encompassing artistic and editorial control and long years of exclusivity with no guarantee of their capacity to market my books. They even said that I was going to have to do all the promotional work and see less than ten percent of the profit. Not a very enticing picture to me.

So, I decided to turn the summer of 2003 into a time to find the best way to publish my novels. As I researched the possibilities, it became clear that Lightning Source could most cost effectively solve my problems. When I visited their facility in July, I became convinced that my decision to print with them was the best thing I could have done for myself and for Nightengale Press.

I am delighted with the quality and the impression my readers have of me, of my work, and of Nightengale Press. That my readers can go directly to online bookstores such as Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble and others to order, or are able to ask for it in any bookstore, chain or independent, nationwide is a huge plus.

I opted to publish my first novel as a paperback and as an eBook, since this is the 21st Century, and the future will see much more growth (already over 200% in one year) in eBook publishing. Lightning Source advisor, Julia Houk explained in our meeting that, ‘There will always be a need for conventional publishing, since on-demand-printing is cost effective only to about 1500 copies per order. After that benchmark, it is better to go to traditional offset printing.’ And I would be thrilled to need to make that shift for titles produced by Nightengale Press. But that is in the future, and the present is everything.”

Nightengale Press plans to provide a free service to authors, editors, layout artists, illustrators, website designers, reviewers, and public relations specialists so that authors can personally find the help they need to bring their work into print.

Interested professionals can register online to make their services available at www. nightengalepress. com.

What is to prevent other authors from doing the same thing? “Nothing,” Ms. Connelly says, “except know-how, time and courage. I have work experience as a copywriter, a printer, and a graphic designer. I have learned to create websites and have the computer savvy to maintain them. Most of all, I love the challenge. It takes a particularly fearless personality to attempt this kind of leap of faith. But, as Nightengale Press grows, I plan to employ others to keep up with demand.”

In her debut novel, SACRED NIGHT, Valerie Connelly takes the reader from Chicago to the Amazon and back, while redesigning the universal quest for the fountain of youth into a fantasy-rich yet hope-filled tale for the 21st Century. In 220 tension-packed pages, SACRED NIGHT gives new definition to the possibility that an abundant natural micronutrient ensuring life free from all diseases of aging exists. Danger, risk and action permeate the mystery Ms. Connelly creates for her characters. Readers of all ages will find a feel-good kind of literary escape as they soak up the intrigue in the tangle of problems characters in SACRED NIGHT struggle to overcome.

”Conflicts and liaisons between an intriguing cast of human and otherworldly characters all working their own, competing agendas, keep the pace swift,” says Brandi Reissenweber, editor of SACRED NIGHT.

WHATÂ’S IT ABOUT? In the Amazon River basin, the Tokablaki chief, Ahi, risked his tribeÂ’s future by allowing outsiders to buy the secret tribal potion, algala, only to suffer dire consequences because of it. In Chicago, Emily Sanders and Dan Barton survived a bombing because they drank it, but are trapped in another dimension trying to escape it. Landon Pauer made his fortune because he found it and built a black market network to exploit it. Terrorists are killing to get it, and Dr. Blume, Rita Dumas and Detective Cameron must find a way to stop them.

WHO IS THE AUTHOR? Valerie Connelly has been teaching French language and literature and inspiring the youth of Illinois since 1974. In the 1980’s she founded the nonprofit organization, Overseas Alliance, to travel with her students in France to study art, history and architecture, live in French families, and to meet with her most famous friend, then French President Francois Mitterrand. Every year for five years, M. Mitterrand invited Ms. Connelly and her students to the Elysée Palace for the diplomatic celebrations after the parade down the Champs Elysée on July 14th.

Ms. Connelly has also traveled and worked in other parts of the world. In addition to teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) for two years in West Africa, she wrote the English Language curriculum and helped set up a school in Iran in 1973, prior to the fall of the Shah. She has traveled extensively in Europe. And between teaching responsibilities, she researched and wrote about far-flung parts of the world as a copywriter for a major wholesale luxury tour operator.

Life experience, travel, a love of French literature, a consuming habit of reading American and English literature, all came together to ignite the spark of her writing career. Valerie Connelly's second novel, SIDETRACKS will be released in 2004.
