In addition to the SICOM3024PT, Kyland has also released the new PTC1000, media converter capable of delivering IRIG-B signals to existing substation RTU’s and digital timing packets. The Kyland PTC1000 provides a means to synchronize non-1588 devices with new IEEE 1588 networks through a capability that has an IEEE 1588 Slave clock on input and an IRIG-B timing signal output. This allows older IRIG-B devices to be in sync with the same master clock as newer IEEE 1588 IEDs, through dedicated IRIG-B cabling.

Each Kyland product is designed to operate in the harsh environment of utility substations and provide highly accurate time synchronization for all protection and control applications. These Kyland IEC6180-3 products can withstand high levels of electromagnetic interference, radio frequency interference and a wide temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Every Kyland product is designed to meet the challenging communications networking and environmental demands found in utility substations and deliver redundant, stable and ultra accurate synchronization for all utility timing applications.

The new Kyland SICOM3024PT Precision Time™ Gigabit Ethernet switch, coupled with sub 10 nanosecond time stamping accuracy is the ideal solution for implementing time critical control networks such as the IEC68150 Process Bus. Designed to easily handle the continuous heavy stream of information from a substation’s intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), while providing super accurate hardware assisted time stamping, the Kyland 3024PT is in a class of its own, and orders of magnitude superior to its competitor’s products. Able to perform IEEE 1558 v2 Master, Slave and Transparent Clock functionality, the SICOM3024PT provides the capabilities for network design engineers to create a combined SCADA communications and timing network.

Kyland also offers an optional GPS timing source card, making the SICOM3024PC the network’s IEEE 1588 Grand Master clock, supplying time synchronization for the substation and eliminating the need to connect with time sources through a wide area network. In order for a network to have true forensic capability – you must have ultra-accurate time stamps to detect what happened first, second, third – you get the idea. Your timing must be faster than the event you are trying to time” Steve Crowell went on to further elaborate – “Timing can be quite interesting and fun – but you have to understand the terms.

A microsecond is a unit of time equal to one millionth (10-6) of a second. A nanosecond is a unit of time equal to one billionth (10^-9) of a second.

Another way to look at timing is the speed of light. Light travels approximately one foot every nanosecond. 10 nanoseconds of accuracy is the time light takes to travel 10 feet or 10 feet of light.”
