Healthy Travel Media Launches Second Edition of Patients Beyond Borders : Book Offers New Choices for Patients as US Healthcare Crisis Deepens

Healthy Travel Media, publishers of Patients Beyond Borders: Everybody’s Guide to Affordable, World-Class Medical Tourism, today announced publication of the updated and expanded Second Edition of the world’s best-selling consumer guide to international medical and health travel.

CHAPEL HILL, N. C. (PRWEB) July 16, 2008

This impartial, easy-to-navigate trade paperback now gives health travelers more than 400 pages of medical travel destinations, resources, and advice they need in order to make safe, cost-effective decisions about traveling abroad for their healthcare.

"We're pleased to have added several new destinations to the Second Edition, including Israel, Jordan, South Korea, New Zealand, Panama, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Turkey," says Josef Woodman, author of Patients Beyond Borders. "US healthcare costs will rise yet another 6% in 2008, and another half-million are expected to hit the ranks of the uninsured. Patients Beyond Borders has helped thousands travel abroad successfully for medical care, and the Second Edition now offers patients even greater choice."

As the number of uninsured and underinsured Americans continues to grow, travel abroad for treatment is rising dramatically, with international hospitals and clinics reporting 15–40% increases in the number of Americans seeking treatment. More than 180,000 Americans will cross borders for healthcare this year; and that number is expected to nearly double by 2010.

International patients considering travel to particular destinations will now have five country-specific editions to choose from as well. With the upcoming releases of Patients Beyond Borders: Taiwan Edition (August 2008), Patients Beyond Borders: India Edition (September 2008), Patients Beyond Borders: Singapore Second Edition (November 2008), Patients Beyond Borders: Korea Edition (November 2008), and Patients Beyond Borders: Malaysia Edition (Spring 2009), medical travelers will have access to in-depth information on accredited hospitals, clinics, and specialty centers in their preferred destination.

A recent national survey conducted by the U. S. Department of Transportation indicates that long distance travel increases by as much as 23 percent during the winter holiday period. As much as 91 percent of long-distance travel is done by car. CURE Auto Insurance offers the following tips to help drivers and their families have a safe and happy holiday season.

1. Celebrate in moderation. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that most deaths each year involving alcohol-related car accidents occur on December 23rd and January 1st. Don't drink and drive and be aware of those around you reporting suspicious activity to the police.
2. Know what to do if you get stuck in snow. Spinning your wheels will only dig you deeper. Instead, turn your wheels from side to side to push snow out of the way. Lightly hit the gas to ease your car out, and if possible, shovel snow away from the tires. If all else fails, try rocking the vehicle. Shift from forward to reverse and back with a light touch on the gas each time until the vehicle gets going.
3. Be careful on hills. Do not increase speed up hills. Applying that extra gas on a snow-covered road allows your wheels to start spinning, whenever possible, avoid stopping on hills because your car can begin to roll backwards. Lastly, let your car descend down a potentially slippery slope on its own. Try not to apply gas if it is not completely necessary.
4. Don't panic. If you should become stranded during a winter storm stay with your vehicle and do not panic. Keep the motor running for about 10 minutes every hour to keep it warm but keep windows open a little to avoid the buildup of carbon monoxide. Try to make the car visible with brightly colored cloths tied to the side view mirrors, door handles or external antenna as a signal of distress.
5. Do not use cruise control when driving on slippery surfaces. Many holiday drivers rack up major miles visiting friends and family for their festive celebrations. Although you have a long trip ahead of you, cruise control does not know the roads like you do and may power through potentially dangerous areas. Be the driver and stay in control.
